Pit bull

The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is a breed of dog originally from the United States. Occasionally confused with the American Staffordshire Terrier, with which it shares origins, but differs in terms of standard and selection criteria. It should not be confused with the Staffordshire bull terrier or the English bull terrier. The American Pit Bull Terrier is not recognized by the FCI, its records and standard being in charge of the UKC and ADBA mainly, each with their own canon of the breed, which do not differ much.

Pit bulls currently perform in the detection of narcotics, in security services, as pets and as prey dogs in boar hunting. In Spain it is classified as a potentially dangerous dog.

History

In the days when pit dog breeds were at their peak, the definition of bulldog referred to almost any English dog that was used for the sport known as "Bull-baiting" which consisted in having one or two fight. dogs against a bull, to weaken the slaughter cattle with the idea that this improved the taste of the meat. But in 1835 this and similar sports were banned by the British government. For this reason, dog fights became popular, as they were easy to hide. For the fights between dogs they make necessary the development of a small dog and more agile than the bulldog. And it was like that then that they began to mix the bulldogs with terriers, giving origin to the Bull-and-terriers dogs that are the ancestors of all the bull-type terriers of today. In the middle of the 19th century, these bull-and-terrier dogs began arriving in the United States through Irish and British immigrants. In the United States these dogs have been improved with the union between the Irish and British lineages. On February 10, 1898 these dogs were recognized by the United Kennel Club as American pit bull terriers.5
